The Alameda County Community Food Bank member food pantry located at the Lake Merritt United Methodist Church will be holding its 5th annual LIFT benefit concert on May 5th..
Over the past 4 years, this benefit has helped the Food Pantry raise more than $25,000. 100% of the proceeds
raised goes to support food programs that are fully volunteer-run. This concert helps ensure the Food Pantry can continue to operate and serve the community.
The Lake Merritt United Methodist Church (LMUMC) food pantry has been serving the Oakland Community for over 30 years
by providing free food to individuals and families in need. The Pantry distributes fresh fruits and vegetables, and nutritious shelf stable foods to over 15,000 people throughout the year. Last year, we distributed 130,000 pounds of food, including 85,000 pounds of fresh produce.
As the needs of our community have evolved, we have expanded our delivery channels
to address food insecurity in two new ways:
- For the past three years LMUMC has been distributing healthy lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays to individuals in need around Lake Merritt. This year, the meal preparation process was changed to improve efficiency, and since the beginning of 2018, we have distributed over 1,200 bagged lunches.
- In 2017, NPR reported that a national survey showed high rates of hungry and homeless Community College students. And a study conducted at Laney College showed that over half of student respondents were found to have low food security in one form or another. In response to this demonstrated need, LMUMC is partnering with Laney College on a pilot program to distribute dry food items, such as peanut butter and canned tuna, to students on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. The Alameda County Community Food Bank delivers fresh produce on the first and third Tuesdays.
The concert will be held at the Lake Merritt United Methodist Church. We have a terrific lineup of musical groups from the Oakland and greater East Bay Community. All of these musicians are generously donating their time and talent.
