When We Are Offered Shortcuts

While we often think of Satan’s temptations as earthly pleasures or frivolous desires, what Satan actually offers Christ are the very tools he could use to carry out the mission God gave him–feeding the hungry, ruling the nations, trusting in God. On their own, they are not bad things, these temptations. Yet Satan offers a shortcut to each of them, one that leads Jesus to skip the long walk of his own faith, one that takes him away from the people he is sent to, one that skips all the hard work of discipleship. In this scripture, Jesus shows us that true faithfulness says no to shortcuts and yes to walking in God’s paths. Rev. Mary Elyn Bahlert is preaching. Join us.
Sunday worship begins at 10:15AM.

The Pearl of Great Price

The parable of the pearl is one of Jesus’ shortest teachings. A merchant searches for pearls, finds the greatest particularly special pearl, and sells everything in order to have it. What is your “great pearl”? Biblical scholar Amy Jill-Levine asks the question, “Will we know what we truly want when we see it?” We take a closer look at this teaching and what it means for us today.

Ash Wednesday Self Guided Prayer Walk
Wednesday, March 5th
On Ash Wednesday, March 5th, we will observe the first day of the Lenten season with a self guided prayer walk available in our Sanctuary. The Sanctuary will be open from 1:00 to 2:00 and from 5:30 to 6:30. There will be five stations with the reflection topics of Dirt, Brokenness, Ashes, Water, and Permission. While you can walk the stations at any pace, we do think they will have more impact if you go through them in order, one through five. Of course, ultimately the path you take is up to you; this prayer walk is intended to be a self paced, self-guided experience designed to meet you where you are. We hope to see you there.

Kairos Palestine Lenten Study
March 6, 13, 20, 27, & Apr 24; Noon-1pm

The Cal-Nev Annual Conference’s Palestine Task Force and Friends of Wadi Foquin are teaming up to offer a 5-session study during the upcoming Lenten Season to sit with and reflect on the words of our Palestinian Christian siblings via the Kairos Palestine document. The short, powerful letter is described as “modern scripture,” written to us much like the Apostle Paul wrote to the ancient churches in various locales. It offers us insight into the current reality, calls us to grapple with our understanding of faith and action in light of that reality, and invites us – through repentance – into faithful response. To register and receive the Zoom link, please complete the form here.

The Good Samaritan

This Sunday, we revisit the parable of the Good Samaritan through the ears of a first-century Jewish audience. While we often see ourselves as the Samaritan, called to care for others, biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine reminds us that the original listeners would have heard something quite different. In antiquity, this was known as the parable of the man who fell among robbers—shifting the focus in surprising ways. Let’s listen anew and discover what this powerful story reveals for us today. Join us!
Sunday worship begins at 10:15AM.
