Covenant Service

On Monday, August 11, 1755, it was probably the first real celebration of the Covenant Service in the Methodist movement. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement and spiritual awakening, found the Covenant service rich and meaningful that he wrote in his journal, “Many mourned before God, and many were comforted.” (April 1756)

We begin our new year 2025 with a Covenant service renewing our hearts before God and one another. Join us. The heart of the service is focused in the Covenant Prayer which requires persons to commit themselves to God. See below for the prayer. We will be recognizing past laity leaders and new lay leadership in this service. May God be praised.

Covenant Prayer

I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put me to what you will, align me with whom you will;
put me to doing, put me to suffering;
let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you,
let me be full, let me be empty,
let me have all things, let me have nothing:
I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal.
And now, glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
you are mine and I am yours.
So be it.
And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen

Jeremiah 31:31-34

“A Promise of Love” Christmas Program

Much of the Magnificat, Mary’s song of praise to God, is written not in the future tense, but the past. Mary trusts God to see her through this life-changing pregnancy because she remembers how God has cared for her people in the past; God is trustworthy not just in theory, but has proven God’s love for God’s people. Our gift to God in return is loving God before God has fulfilled every promise; loving God both because of our certainty in what God has done, but also our trust in what God will yet do.  

Our children and friends will share the message of “A Promise of Love” through the Christmas Program directed by Susannah Wood.  They truly shine with God’s light and love. Come and let us adore our newborn King Jesus.  Join us.

A Promise to Rejoice In

This third Sunday of Advent, the prophet Zephaniah reminds us of the profound joy that comes from God’s promises of restoration and presence among his people.  Apostle Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:4-7, ⁴ Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! ⁵ Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. ⁶ Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. ⁷ And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  This is a timely reminder in this season of Advent.  Rev. Jeff Kunkel is preaching this Sunday. Join us.

A Promise to Put Our Hope In

In this season of Advent, we are encouraged to celebrate the promise God has kept, and also to keep faith in the promises God has yet to fulfill. Living in between kept and unkept promises takes great trust, and developing that trust is the major spiritual discipline of Advent.

Just like Jesus’ birth story, our life is filled with disorientation, danger, displacement, exclusion, betrayal, and fear. It’s easy to get impatient and even cynical while we wait for God to keep that promise. When we are tempted to give up on God’s promises, the psalmist of Psalm 25 reminds us to turn to God with our frustration and lament. Paul reminds us of the witness of the church: the community of saints who hold faith for each other with their love, their joy, and their commitment to each other. With God and with each other, we hold our hope in Christ’s return.  Join us!
