Surprise, Surprise!

In life, there are many surprises.   This Sunday is Christ the King Sunday and we crown him with many crowns and watch as Jesus takes his place on the royal throne.  Surprise! Surprise!  Through Matthew 25, we hear Jesus declare that some people thought they knew Jesus all along in their life but discover in the end, they did not know him. Some people thought they did not know Jesus but discover in the end that they knew him.  Surprising! Astounding!  Unexpected!  I am not sure if I want to be surprised in the end! Advent Worship Series:

Promises: Awaiting Christ in a Weary World

(worship series by Deep Well Worship resource)

Following the Revised Common Lectionary for Advent Year C, this four-week Advent sermon series encourages our congregation to celebrate the promises God has kept, and also to keep faith in the promises God has yet to fulfill. Living in between kept and unkept promises takes great trust, and developing that trust is the major spiritual discipline of Advent.

Love

As the “Do Unto Other” worship series draws to a close, we may feel more or less resolved in our openness to each other. Loving our neighbors–including relatives, coworkers, acquaintances, strangers–as ourselves is no simple task. We need God. We need the love of God to show us mercy and strength to love as God loves. We need the story of Jesus–the one who loved across the lines that had been drawn in the society of his day but who also stood up for the least and the lost. We need faith that no matter the strain of differing positions, policies, and politics, we will move forward in love. Disagreeing need not be antithetical to love and grace. And indeed, our world depends on all of us working for a better world filled with more kindness, compassion, humility, respect, and love. (Worship Design Studio).

Respect

“R.E.S.P.E.C.T., find out what it means to me,” so sang Aretha Franklin. And she convinced us that it means a lot. Sometimes we think having respect means to agree or be the same. But that is not actually the depth of what respect is about. It comes from the Latin respectus which means “the act of looking at one often, to consider, to observe.” We are called to respect by tending to one another–regarding each other, considering each other–early and often. As we live on uncommon ground (because the reality is that common ground is sometimes not possible), what can we do to keep tending to one another as “kin” worthy of respect despite our differences?  – Worship Design Studio “Do Unto Others” Worship series

All Saints Sunday

We are celebrating All Saints Sunday this Sunday. John Wesley considered it one of the greatest celebrations in the life of the church. It was a festival he dearly loved.

We are celebrating All Saints Communion Sunday as we remember the saints in our lives through songs, poems, prayers, partaking in Communion and light candles in memory of saints we hold dearly in our hearts. This is a day of looking forward, even as we remember the past we shared with the beloved of God. We long for the fulfillment of the promises and the in-breaking of eternity that we might stand with those who have gone before. So while there is sadness and the grief of loss, there is also the joy of the promise. Join us as we sing songs with the saints of God in hope and celebration of all that is ours in God. Humility

The root of the word “human” is the same as the word “humility.” It all means literally “on the ground.” From dust we came, and to dust we shall return. When we hear each other’s fears, anxieties, and pain, we can return to the ground of hope… that we are all experiencing the pains of being human. This Sunday, we remember to look first at our neighbor as a person, not a position. Beginning conversations this way may help us to stay human and “on the ground” with one another rather than needing to come out “on top.” (Worship Design Studio)

Compassion

On this second Sunday in our series “Do Unto Others,” our theme is compassion, which comes from a Latin root meaning “to suffer with.” That is to say, we exercise compassion when we allow ourselves to share in another’s story of pain, suffering, or struggle. As a spiritual practice, compassion has the potential to transform how we live with others. It grounds our relationships in mutual care and concern, not indifference or domination. Feeling compassion is part of our human nature, so why is it so hard to practice? What can we do to reclaim it? That is what we will explore.  –Deacon Ken Schoon
