Resistance to Multi-Tasking

This Sunday, we reflect on Sabbath as resistance to multitasking. Drawing from Walter Brueggemann’s critique of ancient Israel’s distorted Sabbath practices, we examine how multitasking—a drive to do more, control more, and extend power—can compromise effectiveness and productivity.

The Sabbath command is an urgent summons to break the pattern of the divided heart… before it is too late.  No wonder Jesus says, “Do not be anxious”  Join us in exploring the importance of honoring and keeping the Sabbath practices.

Brueggemann writes “Sabbath is not simply a pause. It is an occasion for reimagining all social life away from coercion and competition to compassionate solidarity. Such solidarity is imaginable and capable of performance only when the drivenness of acquisitiveness is broken. Sabbath is not simply the pause that refreshes. In Sabbath as Resistance: Saying No to the Culture of Now, Walter Brueggemann presents a thought-provoking exploration of the Sabbath as a profound act of defiance against the anxiety-driven demands of contemporary culture.

Remember the Sabbath

In today’s world, with its relentless emphasis on success and productivity, we have lost the necessary rhythm of life, the balance between work and rest. Constantly striving, we feel exhausted and deprived in the midst of great abundance.  Keeping the Sabbath practice allows us to break this restless cycle and focus on what is truly important: God, I, other people and all life as God intended it to be.

We begin the new year with a sermon series on “Sabbath”.  This worship series will explore concepts from Walter Brueggemann’s Sabbath as Resistance and Wayne Muller’s Sabbath, Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in our busy lives.  Join us.

Sabbath as Resistance

Covenant Service

On Monday, August 11, 1755, it was probably the first real celebration of the Covenant Service in the Methodist movement. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement and spiritual awakening, found the Covenant service rich and meaningful that he wrote in his journal, “Many mourned before God, and many were comforted.” (April 1756)

We begin our new year 2025 with a Covenant service renewing our hearts before God and one another. Join us. The heart of the service is focused in the Covenant Prayer which requires persons to commit themselves to God. See below for the prayer. We will be recognizing past laity leaders and new lay leadership in this service. May God be praised.

Covenant Prayer

I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put me to what you will, align me with whom you will;
put me to doing, put me to suffering;
let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you,
let me be full, let me be empty,
let me have all things, let me have nothing:
I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal.
And now, glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
you are mine and I am yours.
So be it.
And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen
