Desperate Desiring
Last week we talked about Step 1, which begins with admitting our powerlessness over alcohol, people, places, or things in a loving and confidential community where we help each other to find light and life. This becomes our lifeline, and this is where we begin.
This Sunday, we reflect on Step 2. The Big Book from Alcoholics Anonymous thus describes step 2: “We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.” This is called “The Hope Step.” Would you join me this Sunday as we reflect on our desperate desiring for wholeness? – Pastor Sunae

In this worship/preaching series, we will see how the 12 Steps can inform and assist anyone who is ready to be honest with developing a practical faith, born in pain and powerlessness, that actually works. Locked Up in Our Own Devices
This summer, we begin our new worship series which will focus on finding freedom through 12-Step Spirituality from Alcoholics Anonymous. The New Testament calls it salvation (Sozo), healing, wellness, and wholeness, and the 12-Step program calls it recovery.
Franciscan Father and theologian Richard Rohr writes in his book, Breathing Under Water: Spirituality and the Twelve Steps, “We are all addicts. Human beings are addictive by nature. Addiction is a modern name and honest description for what the biblical tradition called ‘sin,’ and medieval Christians called ‘attachments.’ Substance addictions like alcohol and drugs are merely the most visible form of addiction, but actually we are all addicts…” (p. 22).
Through the story of the Prodigal Son, Jesus tells this story for a much more startling point. He was redefining what it means to be lost. Listening to the two brothers’ story in the Prodigal Son, and also the father’s story, we see that we can be lost, and we can also be found. The only requirement for being found or receiving the forgiveness, healing, and life-giving grace of God is to know that we need it.

Happy Farewells
This Sunday will be my last Sunday as Associate Pastor at LMUMC. It has been a joy and a privilege to serve this past year with Pastor Sunae and all of the fine leaders of this great church. But I will still be around, which will be clarified for all in worship. My sermon will be “Happy Farewells”, based on Philippians 4:4-9.
I have been reminded that for the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, happiness is the final end or goal that encompasses the totality of one’s life. It is not something that can be gained or lost in a few hours, like pleasurable sensations. It is more like the ultimate value of your life as lived up to this moment, measuring how well you have lived up to your full potential as a human being. By that standard, I am a very happy man. The Apostle Paul wrote, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

Can We Dream?
Our worship this Sunday will be inspired by the cosmic vision in Isaiah 65:17-25, which will form the basis for my message, “Can We Dream?” The Good News for us today, as in ages past, is that we are not abandoned: a loving God calls us forward. 2024 Annual Conference Session Report
Over 750 clergy and elected lay delegates gathered at the Safe Credit Union Convention Center in Sacramento from June 7-10 for the 176th Session of the California-Nevada Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. This Sunday, our two lay delegates, Sue and Laurel, and Pastor Sunae will witness how the new spirit moved and blessed everyone as our youth and young adult delegates led worship!
