Locked Up in Our Own Devices
This summer, we begin our new worship series which will focus on finding freedom through 12-Step Spirituality from Alcoholics Anonymous. The New Testament calls it salvation (Sozo), healing, wellness, and wholeness, and the 12-Step program calls it recovery.
Franciscan Father and theologian Richard Rohr writes in his book, Breathing Under Water: Spirituality and the Twelve Steps, “We are all addicts. Human beings are addictive by nature. Addiction is a modern name and honest description for what the biblical tradition called ‘sin,’ and medieval Christians called ‘attachments.’ Substance addictions like alcohol and drugs are merely the most visible form of addiction, but actually we are all addicts…” (p. 22).
Through the story of the Prodigal Son, Jesus tells this story for a much more startling point. He was redefining what it means to be lost. Listening to the two brothers’ story in the Prodigal Son, and also the father’s story, we see that we can be lost, and we can also be found. The only requirement for being found or receiving the forgiveness, healing, and life-giving grace of God is to know that we need it.
Do you need it? Come and join us as we begin this important step to find freedom through 12-Step Spirituality.
Sunday worship begins at 10:15AM.

Happy Farewells
This Sunday will be my last Sunday as Associate Pastor at LMUMC. It has been a joy and a privilege to serve this past year with Pastor Sunae and all of the fine leaders of this great church. But I will still be around, which will be clarified for all in worship. My sermon will be “Happy Farewells”, based on Philippians 4:4-9.
I have been reminded that for the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, happiness is the final end or goal that encompasses the totality of one’s life. It is not something that can be gained or lost in a few hours, like pleasurable sensations. It is more like the ultimate value of your life as lived up to this moment, measuring how well you have lived up to your full potential as a human being. By that standard, I am a very happy man. The Apostle Paul wrote, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

Can We Dream?
Our worship this Sunday will be inspired by the cosmic vision in Isaiah 65:17-25, which will form the basis for my message, “Can We Dream?” The Good News for us today, as in ages past, is that we are not abandoned: a loving God calls us forward. Let’s reflect together about courage and delight in life, rooted in love. The choir will sing the inspired song, “A Canticle of Peace”. –Pastor Dale

Following Jesus
2024 Annual Conference Session Report
Over 750 clergy and elected lay delegates gathered at the Safe Credit Union Convention Center in Sacramento from June 7-10 for the 176th Session of the California-Nevada Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. This Sunday, our two lay delegates, Sue and Laurel, and Pastor Sunae will witness how the new spirit moved and blessed everyone as our youth and young adult delegates led worship!
Friends, please do not miss this faithful and important report from the Annual Conference. We will share the General Conference reports and the Core team’s strategic vision as we follow Jesus, thrive in community, and heal the world. Did you know our church’s ministry and mission were highlighted in the Core Team’s report? Congratulations, Lake Merritt UMC!
Our guest preacher was Bishop Gregory Palmer, the longest-serving active United Methodist bishop, who inspired and challenged us about what it means to follow Jesus. Pastor Sunae will be sharing Bishop Palmer’s words preached. Come, friends, join us this Sunday.

The Reign/Rain of God
“I love puns! There’s the Reign of God, as in the reign of a King.
And there’s the Rain of God, as in the grace that falls like water.
I have a simple idea to present to you today: God’s rain falls on the mountain of humanity, creating many creeks and streams and rivers. Each stream, each river is from God, heading back down to God. There’s a Muslim river, Sunni and Shia and Sufi, there’s a Jewish river, orthodox, conservative and reform, there’s a Buddhist river… and there’s a Methodist river.“
Join us as we reflect on the “Reign and the Rain of God” this Sunday. – Guest Speaker, Rev. Deacon Mike Friedrich

Defined by Generosity
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
– Winston Churchill
We are designed to be generous, but there are two voices, the voice of fear and self-gratification, that work against our God-given impulse toward generosity. Do you struggle with this? I am also curious about what happens when we are generous! Come, friends and join our conversation. – Pastor Sunae
