Looking for Preschool and Godly Play Teachers
This summer we have had to say goodbye to our preschool teacher, Aaliyah, and one of our Godly Play Teachers, Sia Linda. We are in the process of hiring teachers to fill these positions. In the meantime, we are looking for volunteers for both the pre-school and elementary age groups. We especially need pre-school volunteers for the 3rd & 4th Sundays and Godly Play volunteers for Sept 8 & 15. Food 4 Thought Begins New Lecture Series September 1st
The Food 4 Thought small group will gather on Sunday, September 1st for a potluck supper and to begin a new three month lecture series titled “When Christians Get It Wrong.” The DVD presenter is Rev. Adam Hamilton, founder and senior pastor at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Kansas, which is currently the largest UMC in the United States. He has written multiple books, including the one this series is based on. Everyone is welcome to attend! Please see here for details.
Office Closed on Labor Day
The Church office will be closed on Monday, 9/2 for the Labor Day holiday.
“Bad Faith” Screening
2:30pm Sunday, Sept 15
The ecumenical group, Oakland Churches Together (OCT) is screening the film, “Bad Faith”, a documentary about Christian Nationalism. The film will be shown on Sunday, Sept 15 at 2:30pm in the Lake Merritt UMC sanctuary. For more information about the OCT group, click here.

Ready and Willing
Our topic for this Sunday’s worship is “The Quest for Humility”. You have undoubtedly heard the joke about the book title, “Humility and How I Achieved It”. As I was beginning to prepare to preach a week or two ago, I was uncertain about how to identify and reveal the “shortcomings” in my life in an honest way that could be both vulnerable and useful to others. Then it came to me in a dream. Come Sunday to hear the rest of the story. –Rev. Dale

New Alarm System at LMUMC
As of this week, we have begun using the new alarm system at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church. This means that church meeting groups must have a designated security person trained on the alarm who will be the first person to arrive and the last to leave. Please contact Ken, our Church Administrator, at office@lakemerrittumc.org if you have any meetings that are not on the calendar, and if you need additional training on the alarm.
