As of this week, we are instituting the new alarm system at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church. Please contact Ken, our Church Administrator, at office@lakemerrittumc.org if you have any meetings that are not on the calendar, and if you need additional training on the alarm.

LMUMC’s Peace in Palestine / Friends of Wadi Foquin Circle invites you to join them in hearing one or both of the following speakers. This Saturday 8/10-Sunday 8/11, the Rev. Munther Isaac, one of the most important Palestinian Christian voices of our time, will be in the East Bay on a national speaking tour addressing the U.S. church about its critical role in calling for peace and justice in Gaza and the West Bank. Daring to Face Ourselves

Step Four of the Big Book of AA says, “We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.” I hear from our AA siblings that this is one of the hard steps in the Twelve Step program. This step is about daring ourselves to face our shadows.

Jesus says it this way in Matthew 7:4-5:

Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and look, the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye!

Step 4 is about seeing your own log first, so you can stop blaming, accusing, denying, and therefore displacing the problem. What is your own log in your life?  –Pastor Sunae

Sweet Surrender

Our neighbors sometimes get the impression that “religious” people are all smug and self-satisfied.  The great irony and truth of Step 3 and of the Gospel is that true power fills our lives when we surrender “our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God.”  In that surrender, our understanding is such a limited requirement.  Grace fills our lives with gratitude and humility.

I am very grateful to be sharing the pulpit this Sunday with Andrew Champion, who will be sharing his story of surrender and spiritual release. –Pastor Dale
