Thanksgiving Community Luncheon

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and communities to gather to give thanks to God for God’s blessings.  Here at Lake Merritt UMC, Thanksgiving is a time we share a special Thanksgiving meal with our community in need.  We invite anyone in the community to come and pick up a full Thanksgiving meal prepared with care and love.

The Lake Lunch team also takes out the same meal to the un-housed whom we typically serve Tuesday and Thursday. The timing is noon to 1:30 in the courtyard on the First Ave side. We have two banners announcing the meal, one for each side of the building.

Would you help us to make this year’s Thanksgiving meal possible?

Please sign up here:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f45a5a72aa3f49-lmumc1

We also welcome your love offering toward the Thanksgiving meal and traditionally, we ask our members to bring raisins and mandarins which we pack as part of the Thanksgiving meal.

“Marcus Borg notes that compassion is the central quality of God in both the Hebrew and the Christian scripture.  Borg emphasizes that God is compassionate – God feels our pain, our loss, and our suffering.

Siblings, this Sunday we reflect on the cup of Compassion.  Bring a cup that reminds you of compassion to worship and as we pray with our cup this week, we can draw both inspiration and comfort from God who is our example of how to hold the hurting ones of our world in our hearts and offer them the cup of compassion.  Join us.

“How large a cup of tears must I drink, O God? How much is enough?” – Ann Weems

“I will turn their mourning into joy, I will comfort them.” – Jeremiah 31:13

This Sunday, we will ponder our life experiences of brokenness.  Friends, we invite you to bring a broken cup as a symbol of the broken parts of our lives. The broken cup has a valuable lesson to teach us.  Anne Lamott shares, “Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come.  You wait and watch and work, and you don’t give up.”

Come! Let us hold our brokenness in the light and love of God.
